Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby?

October 4, 1943: Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five release Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby?  (via about.com)

day 181

My first introduction to Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby? was  the Tom and Jerry version.  Same thing with Listz’s Hungarian Rhaspody — first heard it played by Tom!  These were some smart cartoons.  All those Bugs Bunny and Warner Bros. cartoons were my earliest education.  I learned comedy, music, multi-layered stories, and was even introduced to guys dressing in drag. Bugs made an ugly girl!  The guys writing these cartoons were all funny dudes writing for adults!

I love today’s song.  The whole jive swing period rings my bell.  It’s big band meets rockabilly meets blues!

I did an arrangement of this for John Malino and his band when they played Feinstein’s (which, by the way is closing.)  I really like playing this style!

Is you is…?
