August 7, 1971 The Bee Gees’ How Can You Mend a Broken Heart hits #1!
I was 15 years old in 1971 and this song, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, was not on my radar until years later when I realized how impressive the Bee Gees’ vocals were. They are singing so damn high with those tight harmonies all in head voice. Pretty cool. American Idol contestant Melinda Doolittle sang a version of this song that I really liked.
Claudia and I stayed up late last night catching up on True Blood. We watched five episodes in a row. I like doing that except for having weird vampire dreams. Love watching the Olympics. Not so much into water polo, but I love the running and swimming and diving and gymnastics. Go USA !
The only sport I excelled in was track. I ran the mile in 4:47 and won the NYC indoor championship that year. I won because this other kid — his name was Gaffney and he went to Xavier (I went to Nazareth) — well, Gaffney was a fast little guy who would sneak up and beat me at the last 100 yards on every race, damn I hated that — well at this indoor championship he was puking his guts out beforehand so I was able to kick his little ass. Once.
Got a trophy. It was in my parent’s basement and then in senior year a bunch of friends and I got drunk and took the trophy out into the backyard and shot the running figure off the pedestal with a BB gun. Fun times.
Nowadays I jog.
