When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

March 17th!  Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

day 344

It’s weird that this year St. Paddy’s was celebrated yesterday and today. Yesterday was the parade so the bars and the streets were packed. Today I expected the same, after all today is the REAL day but the streets were empty and I just talked to Dylan and he said Bleecker Street was empty. I guess everyone is hung over from yesterday.

No corned beef and cabbage today. Not that I love it, but growing up my mom would cook it for my dad who did love it. I  just remember that the kitchen stunk! After I finish this I have to call my mom to talk and wish her a happy St. Paddy’s. Her best friend Mae O’Driscoll always marches in the parade, up with the bigwigs, and all my cousins who now are retired cops always marched! I live 5 blocks from the parade and i don’t think I’ve ever gone.

But happy St. Patrick’s day to you all.

We Shall Overcome

January 21, 2013  Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

day 289

When the boys went to Manhattan Country School they would march every year for Martin Luther King Day – different routes each year, stopping at various landmarks to sing freedoms songs and folk songs and read speeches they had written. It was always a fun hang with the other parents and as we walked we’d mix up who we were walking with so it kept it interesting, although it was always cold as hell!  Even now, years after Casey and Dylan have moved on, they still know how to sing We Shall Overcome in both Spanish and English!

Manhattan Country School marched today again, and even though we weren’t part of the march we felt excited to read about it and see the pictures on Facebook and on their website!  I’m sure some of the NYC news channels will have covered it!

Well, today I loved watching the whole inaugural day from the morning until tonight.  I like Obama’s taste in music. Beyonce sounded great singing the National Anthem and James Taylor doing America the Beautiful was nice!!

I got a good hopeful vibe about the next 4 years after watching today. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

December 31, 2012 Happy New Year!

happy new year!

First of all I want to wish my goddaughter Alyssa a happy birthday and a happy new year to all my family and friends everywhere!

This is the first New Year’s eve that I can remember that I’m not working. It’s the first time in a long time that I got to spend New Year’s eve with Claudia, so for our big celebration I took her out to our favorite pizza place and to the movies! We saw Jack Reacher. We liked it (the book was good, too!)  and now we are home ready to watch the ball drop on TV with some popcorn!

I can’t believe all the people freezing in Times Square, though they look like they’re having a great time!  I could never handle it.  I’m so happy and thankful to be home!

Let’s make 2013  a fabulous year!!!!!!!

Silent Night

December 24, 1818: Germany’s Franz Gruber composes a melody to words written by Austrian priest Josef Mohr, creating the standard Silent Night. The song is debuted tonight at Midnight Mass in Gruber’s hometown of Obendorf. (via about.com)

christmas eve 1990

Christmas Eve was a great tradition for us. Our family house on East 19th street in Brooklyn was the xmas hub where all friends and family came. It was a 13 room house so we could fit everyone. All my cousins would sleep over and my friends and I would put on these nightgowns and we would have a puba party.  I’m not sure where that name came from. We would put on an old Ace Cannon record and dance around. Then before the young ones went to sleep we would sing Christmas carols around the piano.

In the morning we all had to get up so damn early and wait on the steps until my Uncle John got the video ready. Then mayhem would erupt as 15 kids ripped through presents. Now this was tradition when I was a kid and stayed true through my kids and my cousins’ kids childhood!

Pretty special memories!

Merry Christmas.
