Auld Lang Syne

December 31, 2012 Happy New Year!

happy new year!

First of all I want to wish my goddaughter Alyssa a happy birthday and a happy new year to all my family and friends everywhere!

This is the first New Year’s eve that I can remember that I’m not working. It’s the first time in a long time that I got to spend New Year’s eve with Claudia, so for our big celebration I took her out to our favorite pizza place and to the movies! We saw Jack Reacher. We liked it (the book was good, too!)  and now we are home ready to watch the ball drop on TV with some popcorn!

I can’t believe all the people freezing in Times Square, though they look like they’re having a great time!  I could never handle it.  I’m so happy and thankful to be home!

Let’s make 2013  a fabulous year!!!!!!!

My Way

December 30, 1968: Frank Sinatra was recording My Way!

day 267

My Way is the power ballad of standards and this is one of my top 5 Sinatra favs. It seems to me that Sinatra did everything his way.

Well we are back home after 3 days in the Poconos. The city snow isn’t as pretty as the country snow,  but the country doesn’t have the 24 hour deli on the corner. It’s good to have both!

Last day of regular football. It’s a shame no NY teams made it but I’m enjoying rooting for the Redskins right now. Wish i could just stay on the couch but Dylan wants a ride down to the village and since I don’t have a good parking spot, why not?

anyway, here’s My Way (if it ever finishes uploading!)

Time In A Bottle

December 29, 1973: Jim Croce’s Time In A Bottle hits #1!

day 266

Jim Croce is one of those singers with a uniquely identifiable voice.  I think it’s a sad voice, but I’m not sure if that’s his tone or if I just feel sad when I listen to him, knowing he died too young.  Time In A Bottle is a beautiful song.

Well, it’s time for New Year’s resolutions.

Oh, wait.  I don’t have any yet.  I guess i have until Monday night to figure some out.

But I don’t drink or smoke and I already gave up red meat.  What the hell else is there?

Keep Playin’ That Rock and Roll

December 28, 1946 Happy Birthday Edgar Winter!

day 265

Dylan and my buddy John Malino and I drove out this past September to the Jersey shore to see Edgar Winter, Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer. Dylan asked me, “Is this an old people’s concert?” and my response was “Yes!”

Edgar Winter is a hell of a musician, playing sax and keyboard and singing 4 octaves! He didn’t do Keep Playing That Rock and Roll  but he played his other hits like Frankenstein and Tobacco Road. Happy birthday, dude!

I got my car door closed today, which if you were reading yesterday’s blog you know the electric door cable of my van snapped. I guess it’s not gonna be electric no more.

In other Poconos news, I went down to our dock and one of our adirondack chairs is frozen in the lake half in and half out and the other adirondack is missing. Maybe it’s at the bottom of the lake. We will see in the spring.

In the meanwhile.  I will keep playing that rock and roll.

ps i pre-recorded a couple videos before driving to PA yesterday.  didn’t want to fight the mountain internet to upload!  here ya go.

Here You Come Again

December 27, 1977 Dolly Parton earns her first gold album with Here You Come Again!

day 264

I’ve always liked Here You Come Again but never learned it, so today i learned it and I love it.

Dolly Parton not only is a great singer but a great songwriter.  Although she actually didn’t write this song, she wrote plenty others including the mega-hit that she recorded and Whitney recorded,  I Will Always Love You.

It’s funny how these country singers are also gospel singers so in their phrasing they have these little gospel riffs. If you listen to Dolly she has all these unique little turns and riffs in her singing.  I love it!

Today we took off to the country.  All was going well as we drove up.  We stopped at the supermarket, bought a bunch of stuff, came outside and the temperature had dropped like 15 degrees in the half hour we were in the store. I went to open my automatic door in the side of my van and a cable popped and now my door is a little ajar and won’t close all the way. So we had to drive to the house with this freakin beeping going off every second for 10 miles.  Claudia sang christmas songs to the beeping. I think that beeping is still going in my brain!

Tomorrow when the sun is out I’ll either try to fix the door or find the fuse to shut off that beeping. Other than that we are tucked in the Poconos house with the fireplace on. It’s been 4 hours and the house is still cold. 2 pairs of socks, a hoodie, a jacket. We will sleep fully dressed tonight  and hope the house is toasty for the morning!
